Tottenham star confesses the truth about his departure from Rangers.

The former Tottenham striker has talked up about his departure from Rangers.

Jermain Defoe alleges he was put into a player-coach role at Rangers, which pushed him out.

The seasoned forward joined Glasgow on loan from Bournemouth in 2019 for a shot at the Premiership,

and Defoe remained until 2022, when he returned to Sunderland. He retired following a brief second stint with the

Black Cats.

He earned his reputation in the Premier League with a memorable tenure at Tottenham, after beginning his career at

West Ham and later playing for Portsmouth, Toronto, and Bournemouth.

Defoe was a popular character after joining under Steven Gerrard and helping the club win the Premier League title in 2021.

However, his departure from Rangers was not entirely voluntary, as the Tottenham star felt forced into a player-

coach role at the end of his playing career.

That left him with a decision to make, which ultimately led to his return to England. He told Football Firsts:

“Before coming to Sunderland, I hadn’t played in about two or three months.”

“Stevie (Gerrard) left, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst came in. I spoke with him, and he basically told me,

“Listen, what’s this player/coach thing?”

“I see you in training, you’re sharp; what’s the situation? Do you want to play or coach?

“I stated I wanted to play. To be quite honest, I didn’t want the player/coach position. It was imposed on me.

So I decided to travel to Sunderland.
