Rumor: Broncos have expressed interest in Chiefs pending free agent

The Broncos are not anticipated to be major players in free agency this year, according to General Manager George Paton. He told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine today that they will be less aggressive than last year, instead focusing on particular needs and positions to enhance the squad.

However, rumors persist that the Broncos could make a significant splash in free agency.

According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, the Denver Broncos are reportedly interested in L’Jarius Sneed, a Kansas City Chiefs prospective free agent. He claims that “some are speculating” that teaming Sneed and Surtain might result in one of the league’s best cornerback duos. Others have “outright told him”that Sneed would offer the Broncos some insurance if they dangled Surtain in a package to move up for a quarterback in the draft.

The Denver Broncos have also indicated interest in Sneed, which is intriguing for a variety of reasons. Some believe that pairing Sneed with Patrick Surtain would give Denver a dangerous cornerback combo. Others have informed me unequivocally that Sneed would offer insurance if they dangled Surtain as part of a package to move up and choose one of the top quarterbacks, as I first reported during Shrine Bowl workouts.

Sneed was a crucial member of the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense during their back-to-back Super Bowl victories and would be an immediate upgrade to the Broncos’ secondary, but this doesn’t seem to make sense.

First and foremost, the Broncos have declared that they do not intend to be aggressive in free agency, and paying CB1 money to Sneed in the early stages of free agency would be an aggressive move. Furthermore, they will be facing a cap crunch, even with the $13 million bonus due to Russell Wilson’s impending release. It wouldn’t make sense for them to spend a lot of money on Sneed when they have so many needs on their roster. Oh, and they have Patrick Surtain, perhaps the finest cornerback in the game, who is in his fourth year of contract, one year away from an expensive fifth-year option cap figure, and a mega contract on the horizon. A move like this just does not make sense for the Broncos.

Unless they want to trade Surtain as part of a deal to move up for a QB. He is the team’s most prized asset and would help them move up for a quarterback if necessary. However, this would create a huge void in their secondary, which is where Sneed’s presence would be justified.

However, General Manager George Paton told reporters today that the team will “look into” a contract extension for their excellent cornerback, and that picking up Surtain’s fifth-year option is almost certain.

At the end of the day, this is only a rumor, and I love a good rumor, but this doesn’t seem to make sense for the Broncos unless they actually include Surtain in a trade-up package. That possibility seems unlikely as of now but this is just something to keep an eye on as we head into the offseason. If Payton wants to be aggressive for a quarterback, anything is possible but I would be surprised by this outcome.

Update

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Chiefs are willing to use the franchise tag on cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and are open to selling him if they are unable to reach a long-term agreement with him.

In other words, this rumor has died and we may go on to the next one.
