Report: Lions re-sign special teams star to 2-year deal worth up to $8 million

Jalen Reeves in Indianapolis, Ind.The Detroit Lions have re-signed linebacker and outstanding member of special teams Maybin to a

two-year contract that could potentially pay $8 million.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Reeves-Maybin is now the “highest-paid core special-teamer ever” as a result of his

guaranteed money, both of which are records for a key special teams player.

Reeves-Maybin signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans after becoming a free agent two years ago, and it’s also important

to remember that. With a two-year agreement to retain a consistently reliable player—not to mention a captain chosen by the club who

went above and above for special teams to close the season—the two parties have decided not to leave each other’s sides. After leading

the league in special teams tackles (13), Reeves-Maybin was selected to his first

Pro Bowl and was nominated to the second team of the All-Pro team.

Even though Reeves-Maybin is well-known for his efforts on special teams, he has consistently demonstrated the potential to be a

better linebacker. At linebacker, the Lions have more options than in a minute. Reeves-Maybin did, however, continue to carve out a

position for himself as the competition heated up, boosting his defensive reps.

This season, the 29-year-old played in every match. With just 92 snaps on defense, Reeves-Maybin recorded a team-high 371 snaps on

special teams. Nevertheless, Reeves-Maybin played in eight of the team’s remaining nine games—including the postseason—with

double-digit defensive snaps. When snap constraints are taken into account,

Pro Football Focus ranks Reeves-Maybin as the second-

best defender on the team. Overall, he was well-received and became a valuable asset on passing and third down plays.

With Derrick Barnes, Jack Campbell, a 2023 first-round pick, and Alex Anzalone at the top of the order, there isn’t a clear route to

playing time. On paper, though, this decision has always made sense.

Most importantly, Reeves-Maybin is accustomed to it and has shown that he can produce more

on special teams than anyone else while still offering reliable depth at linebacker.
