Philipe clement hits out at referee and players after Todd Cantwell’s new injury
The former Norwich City midfielder was replaced after an hour against the Saints on Sunday, with the Belgian claiming that Cantwell might be out for a “few weeks”.
According to FotMob, Clement was rightfully upset with his player’s treatment and demanded more protection from officials after being fouled six times in his 60 minutes on the game.
Clement told the Daily Record on Monday (27 February): “Certainly, it would not have helped. Todd has undergone a significant improvement in this regard. His attitude has improved significantly during the previous few weeks.
Todd has always been an excellent ball player, but he can be a touch too provocative at times. I’ve spoken with him about it. He’s learnt things, and when he started playing more simply, he began to play better.
“So, for sure, in this game, he should have been better protected because there were some obstacles. I recall one in the midfield where he got (flipped over), which for me is always a yellow card.
“But I am not a referee, so I will definitely not participate in those discussions because I am a coach, not a referee. I don’t believe referees should protect one player more than another. I think their job is to follow the rules of the game and to help us have a good product of football.”
Todd Cantwell needs more protection at the Rangers.
Many players are well-known for winding up their opponents on the pitch, with Brentford’s Neal Maupay being the most recent example, following altercations with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and West Ham’s Kevin Nolan.
However, just because Cantwell can antagonize others on the game does not justify his being kicked and abused by unhappy opposition players.

Only one of these yellow cards was for a foul on Cantwell, which resulted in David Keltjens being booked. And, given the recent injury news, the Gers could sorely lose their star player in the coming weeks.
Despite the dismal conclusion for the 26-year-old, Clement will be delighted with the club’s January recruitment activity, which will assist to mitigate the injury blow.
Mohamed Diomande will be more than capable of filling Cantwell’s spot, which will be critical if Rangers are to beat Old Firm rivals Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has given a Gers allegation that Brendan Rodgers is “under the pump” due to a new controversy.
