Goalkeeper Jack Butland has denied that he considered quitting Rangers in January, despite reports of interest from Nottingham Forest.

The Reds had planned to keep Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos as their starters for the second half of the season. The two were signed to permanent contracts last summer as Forest addressed their goalkeeping needs.

However, both had made a number of mistakes, and near the conclusion of the January window, Forest changed their views about bolstering the posts. They had numerous prospective targets on their list, and finally signed Matz Sels on deadline day.

Butland was among the shot-stoppers connected with a move to the City Ground, but Rangers reportedly turned down the offer. And now the former England international admits there was interest in him last month, but it was immediately dismissed.

“It was a clear no,” he told The Sun. “My agent said, ‘This is occurring, what do you want to do?’

“I responded ‘no’ and he said ‘I agree’. The club had already said no, so it was a no on all fronts from the start, and that was that.

We were actually with the team, and I believe it was deadline day. We were all out at a team event, so that was all. There was not even a chance.

“I am liking it. There is too much to do and too much left to do.”

Sels joined the Reds for £5 million from Strasbourg. He has made four appearances and kept one clean sheet.

Following Sels’ arrival, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo spoke of Forest’s goalkeeper search: “It is not about choices. Matz is here because he is a capable goalie. He is experienced, plays frequently, and offers us another alternative. A thousand identities have been revealed, the most of them are false, so let us put an end to the speculation.
