Confirmed Deal:Cowboys to Sign Super Bowl Champ for $65 Million After Release

The Dallas Cowboys could be a perfect landing spot for a Super Bowl champion after his release.

CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani identified the Cowboys as one of three “potential” landing locations for defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah.

The Miami Dolphins intend to release Ogbah in order to free up salary cap space before the offseason begins.

Ogbah got a four-year, $65 million contract deal in the offseason of 2022, following back-to-back nine-sack seasons

in his first two years in Miami.

“The Cowboys have several free agents on the defensive line, including Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler Jr.,

Johnathan Hankins and Neville Gallimore,” Dajani writes in the article.

“Dallas is undergoing a change on the defensive side of the ball with Dan Quinn now in Washington,

but new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is still going to want to bring in experienced players who can get after the quarterback.”

Why the Cowboys Could Sign Emmanuel Ogbah.

Ogbah began his career as a starter in Miami after winning the Super Bowl as a vital reserve for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019.

Ogbah started 23 of his first 33 games for the Dolphins. However, he has only started four of his last 24 games,

totaling 6.5 sacks compared to 18 sacks in 2020 and 2021.

Much of this can be attributed to a significant decrease in playing time.

Ogbah played 77% of defensive snaps in 2020 and 67% of snaps in 2021, but only 56% in 2022 and 25% this season.

In recent seasons, the additions of Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips have moved Ogbah to the bench position.

However, according to Pro Football Focus, the 30-year-old is still a viable pass-rushing threat.

Last season, Ogbah had a pass-rushing grade of 67.1, the second-highest in his eight-year NFL career.

There’s little doubt that Ogbah could still be effective in a pass-rushing role for a competitive team.

And, given that he will still receive $4 million from the Dolphins after his release,

he will most likely consider accepting a lower contract to play for a contending team like the Cowboys.

Given the Cowboys’ own cap difficulties entering the summer — they’re $3.2 million over the budget and rank 26th

in the NFL — and a number of free agents on the defensive line, adding a veteran like Ogbah wouldn’t hurt.

The former 32nd overall choice with 42.5 sacks, 268 tackles, and 101 quarterback hits across 107 games and 71 starts.
