3 Players the Chiefs Must Target With the No. 64 Pick
Kansas City Chiefs supporters haven’t got much time to savor their Super Bowl success because the 2024 NFL Draft is just around the corner. The Chiefs now have six picks in this year’s draft, including the 32nd overall selection in Round 1.
A lot of emphasis has been focused on who the Chiefs will draft at No. 32, but their other picks could also provide NFL-ready players. Since 2016, Kansas City has used second-round picks to draft players such as Chris Jones, Nick Bolton, Willie Gay Jr., and Rashee Rice.
With lots of players to add on Day 2, here are three potential targets for the Chiefs to select 64th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
1. WR Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky
Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the world, but you might argue that the Chiefs haven’t surrounded him with capable weapons. While Rice and tight end Travis Kelce nearly reached 1,000 yards in 2023, the remainder of Kansas City’s pass catchers had 460 or fewer receiving yards.
In other words, the Chiefs would be wise to target Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley in the second round of the draft.
Corley, who stands 5’11” and weighs 210 pounds, has been a standout player for the Hilltoppers. The Orange City, Florida native was the CUSA’s greatest receiver in 2022, leading the conference in receptions (101), receiving yards (1,295), and receiving touchdowns (11). Although he didn’t quite hit those heights in 2023, he still managed to post a 79-984-11 stat line across 12 games, earning first-team All-CUSA accolades.
What’s more impressive is where the 21-year-old ranks in conference history. Corley is 14th in total receptions (259), 21st in receiving yards (3,035), and 15th in receiving touchdowns (29) in the CUSA since the 1996 season.
Corley is a strong receiver who resembles a running back with the ball in his hands. He’s also a competent blocker who knows where to be at the proper time, giving him a valuable addition to the Chiefs’ attack.
This offseason, the Chiefs risk losing some key defensive linemen. Defensive tackle Chris Jones and defensive end Michael Danna are now pending free agents. Although one (or both) may return, it’s never a bad idea to increase D-line depth.
With that in mind, the Chiefs should seriously consider Michigan defensive tackle Kris Jenkins.
The Chiefs were the NFL’s top victors in 2023, so why not add a proven winner? After all, Jenkins was a key member of the Wolverines’ 2024 National Championship run, so he has the experience that would allow him to fit in seamlessly in Kansas City.
Jenkins was consistent for Michigan throughout the 2023 season. Over 15 games, the 22-year-old had 17 solo tackles and 2.5 sacks, and he also recorded his first interception and fumble recovery. He also had two tackles against Washington in the CFP National Championship, earning second-team All-American and All-Big Ten honors.
Jenkins, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 305 pounds, would bring significant size to Kansas City’s frontline. He has strong hands that allow him to get past blocks and stop the run, which would be beneficial given that the Chiefs allowed the 15th most running yards and the ninth most yards per carry last season.
Even if the Chiefs keep players like Jones and Danna, consider how deadly the defense would be with Jenkins in the mix, too? I’m loving it already.
3. Lieutenant Kiran Amegadjie, Yale.
With Donovan Smith also entering free agency this spring, the Chiefs must consider their primary left tackle position. Wanya Morris, picked 92nd overall in 2023, is presently the top Smith replacement after starting four of his 14 rookie games; however, Kansas City may choose someone to provide Morris with some competition.
If this is the case, look no further than Yale LT Kiran Amegadjie.
Amegadjie is the ideal complement to help Mahomes safeguard himself for the foreseeable future. He possesses outstanding stature (6-foot-5, 218 pounds) and a long reach to help keep any quarterback behind him safe. He also has fast footwork and knows how to push defenders off balance, making him one of the more enjoyable.
Amegadjie only played four games last season due to a torn quad, but he is expected to fully recover. He still made the most of his limited playing time, allowing only five quarterback hurries on 128 pass-blocking downs. It was also the second consecutive season in which he did not allow a single sack, bringing his total to one sack allowed on 860 passing downs since the start of the 2021 college football season, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Chiefs adore their athletic LTs, and Amegadjie certainly fits the description. If the Yale blocker can demonstrate that his quad injury is nothing more than a memory, Kansas City could have a new offensive line mainstay on its hands.
