Former Scotland international Charlie Mulgrew believes Motherwell starlet Lennon Miller will join Celtic or Rangers, and that the Old Firm should make a move for the midfielder as soon as possible.

The 17-year-old has now made 21 appearances in all competitions this season after becoming the club’s youngest ever player when he made his senior debut in a Scottish Cup fixture against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in August 2022. Miller’s success within the Motherwell squad prompted manager Stuart Kettlewell to confess he was attempting to sign the bright youngster to a new contract, amid claims that English Premier League team Newcastle United were interested in his talents.

In October, the Motherwell manager said: “We would want to extend Lennon’s contract. Lennon is such a composed young man, and while meeting with his representation and family, we are simply trying to do things in the best way possible to benefit his future. He is a young man who has shown signs of being able to progress through the game’s levels, but he needs to play a lot of games.

“This is an excellent location for him to be. Lennon has never hidden the fact that he enjoys his football here. Just over a year ago, Stevie Hammell and Alan Burrows signed him to a three-year contract, which was the maximum for his age. I don’t think they met too often resistance even though there were numerous suitors for the young lad. It’s my job now to see if we can usher that along. We are desperate to try and extend his stay and give him that foundation for what hopefully becomes a really good career.”

The Scotland Under-19 international made a significant impression for Kettlewell’s side on Sunday, setting up Blair Spittal to put the Steelmen ahead in a closely contested match against Celtic. Although Miller, the son of legendary Aberdeen striker Lee Miller, was unable to prevent his team from losing 3-1 to the Hoops thanks to Adam Idah’s second-half brace, he did grab the attention of Sky Sports pundit Mulgrew.

He told the announcer, “You see his impact on the game today. He plays like a man. He is incredibly clever. We witness him telling the goalkeeper to take the goal kick and flick it  on like his dad used to do. What a player. Level-headed boy. Comes from a good family as well. If I was Celtic or Rangers I would sign him now and have him in the team. What a player he is.”
