Perfect NFL trade Chiefs must complete in 2024 offseason
The Kansas City Chiefs are once again champs! After a turbulent regular season, no one believed in the reigning champs. There were simply too many gaps in the wide receiver room and too much inconsistency from the offense to succeed. However, throughout the playoffs, Patrick Mahomes and his teammates converted all naysayers into believers.
With their outstanding defense leading the way, Mahomes and the Chiefs offense found timely scoring opportunities throughout the playoffs. They rallied from a 10-point deficit in the Super Bowl to defeat the San Francisco 49ers. Despite winning the championship, the Chiefs still have a number of issues to address. Fortunately, those difficulties can likely be resolved through a trade.
Let’s take a look at the ideal trade that the Chiefs may make this offseason to pursue the elusive three-peat.
Chiefs’ most pressing needs
The Chiefs are set to experience a big roster turnover, whether they like it or not. Following their championship victory, they have a slew of prized free agents who may decide to quit the organization without warning. Free agents include L’Jarius Sneed, Chris Jones, Drue Tranquill, and Mike Danna, all of whom played important roles in the team’s championship run. On the offensive side, Jerick McKinnon is scheduled to become a free agency. While McKinnon isn’t as frequently used by the Chiefs, he still provides them with valuable depth.
When discussing the Chiefs’ most pressing need, however, it is difficult to overlook the elephant in the room. Kansas City’s offensive struggles last season were attributable to a subpar wide receiver room. Last season, Kansas City struggled with many drops and a lack of separation. Kadarius Toney was the target of the jokes, but the truth is that almost every receiver struggled.
Another point of worry is their offensive line. The loss of Orlando Brown Jr. created a huge vacuum at left tackle. Donovan Smith was unable to properly man this role, resulting in more pressure than the team desired. Other areas, such as right tackle, might benefit from an update.
Ideal trade target: Brandon Aiyuk.
Most of the Chiefs’ requirements might be met through free agency or the NFL draft. Kansas City has done an excellent job drafting talented players, particularly on defense. Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis have recently been among the team’s most successful players. It’s also worth noting that if the Chiefs want to reduce their cap space, they might look to sign some underappreciated players in free agency.
Yes, there are concerns about the offensive line. The Chiefs normally performed an excellent job of protecting Mahomes, but their protection deteriorated dramatically this season. However, it is uncommon for a team to trade for a left or right tackle, and we do not anticipate the Chiefs trading for an offensive lineman.
This leaves the wide receiver position as the area that the Chiefs can address via trade. While there’s plenty of talented wide receivers in free agency, they could just choose to trade for another established star.
Make no mistake about it: the Chiefs won in spite of their wide receivers. Rashee Rice was solid, but they still need that headliner to take attention away from him and Travis Kelce. This is where Brandon Aiyuk comes in for the Chiefs.
Brandon Aiyuk is only 25 years old and is coming off a very successful statistical year. Last season, he amassed over 1,300 yards and was the 49ers’ de facto WR1. That being said, the 49ers already have two WR1s, including Deebo Samuel, who has inked a big extension. With Brandon Aiyuk likely seeking a contract extension, San Francisco may try to trade for the wide receiver.
If Aiyuk is traded, the 49ers will seek immediate draft compensation. They’d prefer to draft his replacement in this situation. So, the Chiefs will most likely send a few picks (some of which are 2024 picks) to the 49ers in return for Aiyuk. This is a fairly excellent deal for Kansas City and it gives them a chance at retaining Brandon Aiyuk after trading for him.
With Aiyuk in the fold, the Chiefs would be a much more dangerous team to go against. Aiyuk would give Mahomes one more weapon to utilize in the passing attack. It would also be much more difficult for teams to guard against Travis Kelce, as they can’t exactly double him with Aiyuk there.
The Chiefs are well-known for their fantastic high-flying offense, which can bring you down. Bringing in Aiyuk would make their attack much more hazardous than before.
