Confirmed -scotland international sensation would be leaving rangers for free next summer
Rangers veteran goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin is set to walk away from Ibrox for free in May, sources have told Football Insider. The Gers ace, 36, is out of contract later this year and talks are yet to take place over a renewal.
It is believed the Rangers board are ready to allow McLaughlin to leave as he is surplus to requirements.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Glasgow giants feel it is not necessary to keep him around with 2023 signing Jack Butland performing so well as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
McLaughlin hasn’t played a single minute of action for Rangers in the 2023-24 campaign and is yet to make a matchday squad this term. His game time has been reduced following the promotion of Robby McCrorie to second-choice shot-stopper.
Last term, McLaughlin made 16 appearances across all competitions – conceding 18 goals and keeping eight clean sheets. The veteran even turned out for Rangers in the Champions League, helping them qualify for the group stage.
Butland was signed on a free transfer in last year’s summer window following Allan McGregor’s retirement. McLaughlin joined from Sunderland for free in 2020 and has gone on to make 46 appearances in total for the club. He signed his last contract extension in January 2022 but will not be offered a new deal at Ibrox.
Rangers, helped by star performer Butland, are firmly in the title race with Glasgow rivals Celtic this term. The Ibrox club are only behind the Hoops on goals scored with 13 league games remaining in the 2023-24 campaign.
