Rangers: UEFA react to impossible Europa League developments at Ibrox
The newspaper reported in its print edition on Saturday (24 February, page 111) that UEFA have insisted that the Light Blues’ home leg of their tie with Benfica has to kick off at 5:45pm to fulfil the competition’s broadcast commitments. 2:23 / 3:01 Clement will work on making Rangers more clinical
Rangers had voiced their frustrations with the decision via their official channels on Friday (23 February), but the European governing body has insisted that it would be impossible for the game to be played at 8:00pm.
When will Rangers play Benfica at Ibrox in the Europa League? Rangers and their supporters were understandably unhappy with UEFA’s decision when it was announced on Friday, as the earlier kick-off time will stop a number of supporters from making the trip to Ibrox. Philippe Clement’s side have been in phenomenal form since the Belgian arrived in Glasgow and that has seen the fanbase really get behind their new manager, but UEFA’s latest decision has made it harder for supporters to do that on European nights.
While it is understandable that there are television commitments to fill, which financially are incredibly beneficial to the Gers, it does seem strange that this match couldn’t have been televised but just in the later slot of matches.
No matter what time kick-off is, Ibrox will be rocking and the supporters will be well and truly behind their team as they look to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League as Clement and his side continue to eye up the possibility of a quadruple this season.
