The idea that the Kansas City Chiefs could sign upcoming Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agency wide receiver Mike Evans this offseason has gained traction in the wake of the former becoming the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions in 20 years.

But it might cost them All-Pro defensive lineman Chris Jones, since both players are likely to want high salaries.

Jones appears to appreciate the idea of targeting another pass-catcher.

Chris Jones Sends Message That Chiefs Should Sign Odell Beckham Jr.
Odell Beckham Is a Different Player Now

Griffin’s statement, unlike many others published throughout the regular NFL season, received a repost from Jones. Beckham recorded 35 receptions, 565 yards, and three touchdowns for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. He is 31 years old is a three-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion, though he was injured during his appearance with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. Perhaps most notably, Beckham appeared in 14 games.

Beckham also recorded a career-low 50% of offensive snaps, his first time falling below 70% for an entire season.

He played more total snaps in 2021, split between the Rams and the Cleveland Browns. Beckham had played at least 91% of the offensive snaps in his prior five seasons with double-digit outings. Limiting Beckham’s snap count may be the key to keeping him healthy.

He would simply need to play a supporting role for the Chiefs, which could appeal to both parties. Coming off a one-year, $15 million contract in Baltimore, it will be intriguing to see what Beckham’s contract demands are. The Chiefs now have $28.3 million in cap space after the NFL returned $30 million in forward payments from the COVID era.

The Chiefs can afford to roster the current version of Odell Beckham.

Rashee Rice’s breakout down the stretch, combined with Patrick Mahomes’ persistent presence, has left the Chiefs in a very different situation than it appeared at the start of the season, or even halfway through it.

Rice totaled 43 receptions, 518 yards, and three touchdowns in the final six weeks of the season.

He also had an 8-130-1 line in his playoff debut.

Things grew tighter for the former second-round pick, who totaled 132 yards in the Chiefs’ three subsequent playoff games, including six receptions for 39 yards in the Super Bowl. The rapport built with Mahomes this season should translate to a quicker start next season.

Chiefs Overcame A Lot in 2023

For Mahomes, this season and the Super Bowl were the latest feathers in his cap. He put up some of the lowest individual numbers of his career in 2023.

But the Chiefs still tied for the second-best record in the AFC in the regular season.

They also overcame a road trip to win their third Super Bowl championship in the last five seasons. Mahomes still earned his sixth Pro Bowl trip as well. They did it with their defense, and Jones led the way.

A similar formula, possibly using Beckham, may be required.
