Celtic have been named favourites to acquire Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher after Joe Hart announced his retirement at the conclusion of the season.

Hart, 36, will remain Celtic’s No. 1 goalkeeper until the end of the season, after which he will retire from professional sport.

Hart made an unexpected announcement on Thursday, saying,

“I wanted to let everyone know that I would be retiring from football in June.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while; there’s no right or wrong moment, is there?

“There is obviously a conversation around the goalkeeping position for next season and

I think it’s really important that with the blessing of the club we get the message out and it takes one thing out of what people are going to speculate over.”

Following Hart’s retirement, Brendan Rodgers will have Benjamin Siegrist and Scott Bain as goalkeeping possibilities.

And it is thought that Rodgers would try to sign a new first-choice keeper, with Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher being a likely contender.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has previously been linked with a move to Celtic Park amid mounting speculation in the summer,

with Rodgers attributed with active transfer interest.

It was previously speculated that Kelleher, a regular member of Ireland’s national team roster,

would be interested in being Celtic’s No. 1 for many years.

However, Premier League clubs’ transfer interest in Alisson this summer was reportedly turned down because to concerns that he could leave Liverpool.

Kelleher is under contract at Anfield until 2026, but Celtic are the odds-on favourites to sign him if he leaves this summer.

The website gives Kelleher a 50% chance of joining Celtic at the conclusion of the season,

with Wolves, Bournemouth, and Sheffield United as alternatives in the odds list.
