Joshua Barrie has stated that he would be shocked if Leon Balogun was given a new contract at Rangers,

despite his good performances under Philippe Clement.

The Rangers Review journalist reiterated that he does not expect the team to have the same four centre-back options next season.

This follows the announcement that John Lundstram is expected to sign a new term at Ibrox,

with his present contract scheduled to expire at the end of the season.

Barrie told The Rangers Review [22 February]: “He’s been pretty good,

and he was Clement’s first-choice centre-half next to Connor Goldson until that injury.

“I would be inclined not to keep him since I believe his game is based on a lot of physicality.

I could understand the thinking behind giving him another year’s contract,

but that is a position Rangers should look to have a bit of change.

Will Leon Balogun sign a new agreement with Rangers?

While there is no indication of what the club is considering in terms of a new contract offer,

Balogun’s age and profile no longer fit the type of agreement Rangers are looking to make.

The appointment of Nils Koppen as director of football resulted in a shift in transfer strategy,

with the arrivals of Mohamed Diomande (who Koppen personally complimented) and Oscar Cortes.

With an emphasis on younger players who have the potential to flourish and be sold for a profit in the future,

35-year-old Balogun may be surplus to requirements at Ibrox.

However, given Clement’s regular use of the Nigerian in his starting XI this season,

the manager may decide to keep with his current squad this summer.

Chris Jack previously suggested that all three of Balogun, Leon King, and Ben Davies might depart

Ibrox at the conclusion of the season in order to recoup some monies and reinvest in the position,

since all three appear to be on the verge of being cut.
