Rangers: Regret over the appointment of Philippe Clement emerges as chairman speaks out
The one thing that Genk chairman Peter Croonen regrets about the selection of current Rangers manager Philippe Clement is revealed.
Since taking over at Ibrox in October, the Belgian coach has been nothing short of amazing, winning 22 of his 26 games in charge and taking the lead in the Scottish Premiership.
Before joining Club Brugge, Clement managed Genk from December 2017 to June 2019, during which time the team won the Belgian Pro League.
Speaking on Wednesday, February 21, Croonen acknowledged, via Daily Record: “The longer Rangers can keep Phillipe, the better for them.” He has demonstrated his ability to sustain success over multiple seasons.
“He left us after that first title, which is the only thing I regret about assigning him to Genk. Despite our requests for him to stay, he chose to depart.
Under Philippe Clement, Rangers turn the corner.
Especially in the league, the Gers appeared to be lost under Michael Beale’s leadership, as Celtic appeared to be winning the Scottish Premiership handily.
But under Clement, the tide has undoubtedly turned in favor of the Rangers, who are now leading the league
instead of the Hoops. Given that he assisted the Belgian team in winning their first league championship since the
2010–11 campaign, it is understandable why Croonen feels envious of Rangers and Clement.
The fact that their current manager has never remained in one location for longer than three years, though, may
worry the Ibrox faithful. It might not matter too much if he can guide Rangers to several trophies over the course
of the upcoming campaigns, but it is still a pleasant thought.
Given Celtic’s dominance over the previous ten years and Rangers’ potential to win just their second league title in ten, supporters will already be hoping that Clement stays at Ibrox indefinitely.
