The Kansas City Chiefs will need to shift some money about this offseason to keep their core group of players together in their quest for a three-peat in 2024. A hero from the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers is likely to be cut.

The Kansas City Chiefs experienced a lot of bad receiver play in 2023.

The Chiefs wide receiver corps struggled during the regular season. In 2023, the top alternatives for quarterback Patrick Mahomes were rookie receiver Rashee Rice and tight end Travis Kelce. Kadarius Toney, Mecole Hardman, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling all had concerns with their play.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling was a super bowl hero.

Valdes-Scantling recorded just 21 receptions for 315 yards and one touchdown during the regular season. Fortunately for the Chiefs, MVS turned it on during the Super Bowl. He finished with three receptions for 20 yards, including a crucial touchdown in the Chiefs’ comeback victory.

The Chiefs could reduce MVS.

Matt Okada of the NFL’s website wrote about probable cap casualties this offseason. Okada believes MVS could be out, despite his outstanding performance in the Super Bowl:

“Despite a couple of huge catches, Valdes-Scantling was more memorable for his missed plays in 2023, as he finished the regular season with only 21 catches for 315 yards and one touchdown.

That is nowhere near the levels required to justify his $14 million cap hit in 2024. With MVS accounting for only $2 million in dead money (and $12 million in savings), the Chiefs would be wise to move on and look elsewhere for their admittedly much-needed WR depth.”

According to Over the Cap, the Chiefs will enter the offseason with approximately $15 million in cap room. The team has to extend outstanding defensive tackle Chris Jones, which will be costly. The Chiefs might look for a WR2 or WR3 in free agency and build around Rice as their WR1 in 2023.

However, the Chiefs should explore adding a wide receiver in April’s competitive pass-catching draft.
