Even though the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl this year, not everything in Missouri is perfect. In fact, it could be argued that Kansas City prevailed despite their obvious flaws. This season, Mahomes participated in his first away playoff game, and the Chiefs were underdogs in the majority of their contests for a reason.

The upcoming offseason presents the Chiefs with a chance to revamp and reorganize their roster. Naturally, to reload for the upcoming season, that will probably require overhauling a few of their position groups. Although the focus is primarily on the high-profile free agents, the team may be able to sign some unsung heroes during the offseason.

Needs of chiefs in free agency in 2024

What is required of the Chiefs in the impending free agency window? The wide receiver position needs to be addressed first and foremost. The wide receiver room in Kansas City was at best subpar and at worst absolutely appalling. Although Rashee Rice appeared to be a potential threat, everything was made worse by Kadarius Toney’s presence and the frustrating inconsistency of Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Their defense is a noteworthy area that requires attention as well. Although it can be argued that the Chiefs’ defense carried the team to the Super Bowl, they will be losing a number of players to free agency. A number of players are about to become free agents, including Mike Edwards, Chris Jones, Willie Gay, L’Jarius Sneed, and Drue Tranquill.

Another position that might need to be changed is left tackle, given the possibility of Donovan Smith leaving the Chiefs. But don’t expect the Chiefs to sign a free agent tackle to cover Patrick Mahomes’ blindside given the talent that is available in free agency.

WR Tyler Boyd, Bengals

The Chiefs may be able to take a shot at some of the best wide receivers available in free agency if they play their cards correctly. Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman Jr. are two outstanding players who can greatly increase Mahomes’ chances of success. They can also attempt to take aim at Gabe Davis or Calvin Ridley.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs may find great assistance from another Bengals wide receiver. Although Tyler Boyd isn’t among the top five wide receivers in this year’s class, he is still a reliable receiver who, in the right scheme, can play as a WR2/WR1. They can designate Boyd as their first choice or as their second-in-command, depending on how they feel about Rice’s development.

As Kansas City will be receiving one of Joe Burrow’s greatest weapons, the move will also have the added benefit of weakening one of their competitors. The Chiefs will cherish having a player of Boyd’s caliber on the team even in the absence of that advantage.

The Cowboys, Tyron Smith, LT

As we just mentioned, the Chiefs are unlikely to use free agency to address their left tackle needs. That doesn’t mean, though, that they should pass up one of his better blindside tackles when he’s on the field. The Chiefs could certainly use Tyron Smith’s assistance in the trenches as he is about to expire from his contract.

Last season, Donnovan Smith was a complete bust for the Chiefs, racking up multiple penalties and giving up pressure in crucial situations. A team that has made it a point to defend Mahomes as much as possible found it difficult to do so the previous campaign. Mahomes excels at deflecting pressure, but that doesn’t mean he should ignore the line.

Tyron Smith is undoubtedly a concern for the Chiefs. He is getting older, and throughout his career, he has had a long list of injuries. But if he ends up working out for Kansas City, they’ll have one of the league’s best blindside blockers. Smith was the cornerstone of the Cowboys’ outstanding offensive line and was named to the second team of the Pro Football Draft despite his injury problems.

Bengals, Chidobe Awuzie, CB

One more Bengals player? Except that it’s at the other extreme this time. Although he may have played himself out of the Chiefs’ lineup, L’Jarius Sneed was a vital member of the team this season. Being the best cornerback going into the NFL free agency period, you can bet teams will be lining up to try and sign the star player.

Brett Veach will now make every effort to hold Sneed behind him. Players like him don’t just appear in the league; he is the best lockdown corner. They do, however, need to be ready with a fallback strategy in case it doesn’t work out.

Not many people pick Chidobe Awuzie as their first choice among the best cornerbacks. Awuzie had a rough start to the season in 2022 and never fully bounced back for the Bengals. However, Awuzie was one of the league’s top lockdown corners prior to that dreaded ACL tear.

In this case, the Chiefs will be counting on Awuzie to rebound from a poor year brought on by injuries. It never hurts to add depth to a Super Bowl roster that is getting old, even if Sneed decides to resign.
