OFFSEASON: What Chicago Bears Need the Most!

Chicago, III- The Chicago Bears’ next steps are free agency and the NFL Draft, in that order.

This will provide an opportunity for general manager Ryan Poles and his staff to enhance a Bears roster that improved by four wins from Year 1 to Year 2.

These are the top needs for the Bears in the offseason, broken down into groups.

Top Tier: Playmakers and pass rushers

The Bears have contracts with receivers Tyler Scott and DJ Moore for the upcoming campaign. Regardless of who is under center, more needs to be added.

As a receiver, Moore ranks #1. Despite all of the offensive difficulties the Bears faced, he proved he was capable of having his best season as a professional.

He can’t accomplish it by himself, though.

Aside from the quarterback situation, the Bears’ top priority is to surround the team with up-tempo players who can make a difference. Wide receivers are not the only ones affected by this.

In today’s NFL, adding young, potentially great receivers and pass rushers is essential. With the No. 9 overall pick, the Bears can accomplish that.

Chicago Bears great Steve McMichael is expected to be released in the coming days after being hospitalized for a urinary tract infection. The family released a statement on Friday stating that McMichael, who has ALS, is responding to medication in the hospital.

Middle Tier: QB, offensive line, and safety

So let’s avoid picking apart details.

Tyson Bagent proved to be a reliable backup for the Bears last season as they witnessed Justin Fields’ progress. It’s reasonable to suppose that Chicago’s quarterback situation would not be as complicated if the Panthers had not given the Bears the first overall pick.

The conversation continues because there is a chance to include Williams. That’s not a bad thing, but the difficulty of this discussion stems from Fields’ improvement, making this a middle-tier need nonetheless.

Eddie Jackson and Cody Whitehair were cut, which creates a need for starting safety Jaquan Brisker’s backup as well as depth on the offensive line.

Free safety and guard are the two positions that might be addressed on Days 2 or 3 of the NFL Draft.

Bottom Tier: Linebacker and tight end

Tight ends and linebackers are not major concerns for the Bears.
Adding a second tight end who could block at a high level opposite Cole Kmet would be ideal. But the Bears could certainly find options in free agency without using up too much of their open cap space.

The Bears’ middle linebacking corps is talented and includes Jack Sanborn, Trumaine Edmunds, and TJ Edwards.

Still up in the air: Cornerback

This will be irrelevant if Jaylon Johnson can be signed by the Bears.
Along with a defensive back group that could get better as Kyler Gordon and Tyrique Stevenson begin their third and second NFL seasons, respectively, the team will have its top cornerback.

This position rises to near the top immediately in the event that Johnson signs elsewhere. Gordon is a good fit to play nickel cornerback while Stevenson is an outside player. Even when facing some of the top receivers in the NFL, Johnson is a reliable player.

During this offseason, the team’s top priority is most likely to fire him. If they don’t, GM Ryan Poles will have yet another enormous task to complete.
