Rangers’ title win will result in a “massive change of direction” financially, with up to £60 million available for automatic Champions League qualification, according to Peter Martin.

The PLZ Soccer host answered on The Football Show on February 19th, after Peter Rough questioned why Celtic had not spent in January to strengthen their struggling team since the prize is so large at the end of the season.

The Light Blues did not sign the striker many expected, but they did agree on a “huge” £4.5 million deal for Mohamed Diomande, and the midfielder scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 win at St Johnstone, propelling them to the top of the SPFL.

Rough stated (19m 45s): “Everyone understands what’s on the line at the conclusion of the season; it’s automatic entry. It’s another 40, 50, or 60 million pounds. Why mess with it in January? I know [managers say] January isn’t the time, but sometimes you have to take a chance.”

Martin added: “It’s a £60 million gamble, which isn’t unprecedented. There have been a lot of years where this plan has been a gamble that hasn’t paid off, and this is just another one where £60 million represents a big shift in direction for Rangers.”

Lee McCulloch then stated, “Of course it is, and I believe the way they’ve been operating, they’ve certainly not had that kind of money. So, if there’s a carrot there to obtain that kind of money, you can bet they’ll attempt to get it.”

Rangers favourites to win Champions League cash prize?

The Gers have spent substantial money in one way or another during the last two transfer windows, but it appears that the acquisition of Philippe Clement was necessary to obtain excellent value for it.

The summer splurge on the likes of Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes has already proven to be a waste when the duo were shipped off last month, while the jury is still out on Cyriel Dessers and Danilo.

Free transfer arrivals Jack Butland and Dujon Sterling have been more visible success stories, but the revamp under Michael Beale has left Rangers looking further away from a title than ever before.

Clement’s recovery has been immensely spectacular, and while there is still a long way to go, numerous commentators believe the Belgian is on his way to his first SPFL crown.

While it remains a potential issue that Dessers and Silva were not supported by a striker in the Lawrence Shankland style, that was far from the mind of Ibrox fans when big-money January signing Diomande slammed home the long-range opening at the weekend on his way to the league lead.
