Ibrox Review : Possible Rangers players who could run out there contract and leave Ibrox in 2024

Rangers have six players whose contracts expire in 2024. Throughout the January transfer window, they were free to negotiate with other clubs.

Rangers have been fantastic since Philippe Clement’s arrival in October. The Belgian manager has now acquired the trust of the Ibrox faithful, and the future appears promising under his leadership, in stark contrast to the start of the season under Michael Beale.

However, there are a few squad flaws that will need to be addressed throughout the 2023/24 season. Clement and newly appointed football director Nils Koppen must now collaborate to determine which Rangers players, whose contracts expire at the end of the season, warrant prolonged stays.

Six current first-team players fall within that category. So, let’s take a look at the Rangers players who will be out of contract in 2024 and predict whether or not they will stay in Govan.

John Lundstram

Rangers have signed John Lundstram on a three-year agreement after his contract with Sheffield United expired in 2021. The midfielder was Steven Gerrard’s third signing of the summer window and has been an important player for Rangers ever since.

Lundstram provides experience and composure to the park’s center, attributes that were evident under Philippe Clement’s leadership. Rangers great Barry Ferguson views him as the “real driving force” under the Belgian, and it would be surprising if ‘the best on Earth’ left for nothing.

Thankfully, Clement acknowledged in December that first conversations with Lundstram about a contract renewal had taken place, so we can expect this one to be resolved.

Borna Barisic

As things stand, Borna Barisic will leave the club at the end of the 2023/24 season.

There is little doubt that Barisic divides opinion among Rangers fans, and at 31, many would not mind seeing him leave Ibrox on a free.

Furthermore, Ridvan Yilmaz appears to be more popular with Clement in the squad, so while Barisic has been an excellent servant for Rangers since signing in 2018, the summer could be the moment for him to leave.

Ryan Jack

Ryan Jack is another prospective player who might leave Ibrox this summer. Injuries have plagued the Scotland midfielder during his career at Rangers, and this season is no exception.

Jack, a central midfielder recruited from Aberdeen in 2017, is an excellent alternative for Clement, but he is ineffective when injured, and the Gers may be inclined to let his contract expire as a result.

To be clear, Jack’s release would not be surprising.

Kemar Roofe

Kemar Roofe, like Ryan Jack, is out of contract in 2024 and struggles to stay healthy.

The unlucky Englishman, signed from Anderlecht in 2020, has played a complete 90 minutes in just one Scottish Premiership game this season and was sidelined for months after pulling up in a win over St Johnstone in December.

Roofe is unquestionably one of the club’s finest finishers, with 38 goals in 93 games, but he may be released in the summer due to his frequent injury problems.

Jon McLaughlin

Jon McLaughlin is almost set to quit Rangers in 2024 after his Govan contract expires.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper has failed to kick a ball under Michael Beale or Philippe Clement this season, which speaks volumes about his future with Rangers.

Jack Butland is the club’s indisputable No. 1, and McLaughlin has little to no chance of earning any minutes unless the former Manchester United goalkeeper is injured. We’d be shocked if McLaughlin stayed at Ibrox beyond 2023/24.

Leon Balogun

Leon Balogun has been a key figure for Clement since he came in October. Michael Beale brought him back to the club in the summer as a backup, but Balogun is now critical to Clement.

The 35-year-old Nigerian centre-back has formed a great connection with Connor Goldson, which is expected to continue until the conclusion of the season.

He is clearly in Clement’s plans at the present, which could result in a one-year contract extension in May, despite his age.
