Latest News : Hoops Legend’s verdict on the imminent sacking of Brendan Rogers as Gers go top of Scottish Premiership
Keith Jackson has said that finishing second to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership could be a “sackable offence” for Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
With a 3-0 victory over St Johnstone on Sunday (18 February), the Gers moved to the top of the division for the first time this season and in 18 months.
That came a day after Celtic lost another point in a 1-1 home draw with Kilmarnock, as their once-insurmountable lead eroded.
Jackson wrote for the Daily Record [19 February]: “Rodgers was correct in stating that both of these teams cannot coexist peacefully within the same city.
“That’s because finishing second in a two-horse race is often a sackable infraction.
And right now, while most Rangers supporters are happy, simply to be participating in a legitimate title fight, the majority of Celtics fans find the idea virtually intolerable.”
Rangers beat Celtic to become the Scottish Premiership title favourites.
Rangers have finally risen to the top of the Scottish Premiership table after a long wait.
And, let’s be honest, not even the most optimistic supporters foresaw this a few months back.
Despite losing at Celtic Park at the end of December, the Gers trailed by nine points.
Despite having games on hand. To reach the summit, a near-perfect run would be required,
as well as the hope that Celtic would have a fall in form.
Both of these eventualities transpired, and with three months left in the season, Rangers lead Celtic by two points.
The expression implies that getting there is easy, but remaining there is challenging.
Not so on this instance as Philippe Clement’s players demonstrated incredible tenacity in closing the distance
That is not to mean that fans are already planning title celebrations for May,
but the Light Blues must now embrace their status as title favourites.
All is not well at Celtic. If Rangers finishing first marks the end of Rodgers’ second stint, then so be it.
