Phillipe Clement already altering Rangers’ transfer approach as the Gers set to pocket £30m from transfer

Clement uses Club Brugge as an example of how Rangers might become a transfer powerhouse.

The Gers have a history of allowing players’ contracts to expire, with Borna Barisic being the most recent example this summer.

Rangers are capable of pulling off the odd huge sale, as Calvin Bassey paid a club record fee of slightly under £23 million in July 2022.

Clement believes Rangers, like his former club Club Brugge, can turn over additional players for £30 million or more.

The Belgian club this recently transferred forward Igor Thiago to Brentford for roughly £30 million [The Guardian, 14 February].

“Brugge has been doing this for several years. “We started that a little bit,” Clement said, as reported by the Rangers Review on February 17.

“They have now sold Thiago for €37 million. As a result, you will notice that these payments increase year after year as you build a reputation.

“It’s not something you can complete in a year. You also need to establish a reputation as a club. It is about the club’s level.

“If you sell someone for a specific price and he does really well elsewhere, it opens opportunities for the next ones.

“People say, ‘Ok, he’s coming from Rangers; that’s where to look.'”

“That is something that Ajax, for example, has done for quite some time. Then, whether a player was with Ajax or another team, his value differed.”

Phillipe Clement is already modifying Rangers’ transfer tactics.

Rangers are not becoming a selling club in the traditional sense, but rather growing more sustainable over time.

For example, if the team can bring in £30 million for a player this summer, it will support the next two or three transfer windows.

The Bassey sale demonstrates the Gers’ ability to negotiate substantial fees, but such transactions are rare.

What would be beneficial is if the club could promote a number of players from the academy to the first team.

Rangers’ transfer strategy has already begun to shift since Clement came, as we saw in January.

Some players unknown to the majority were signed, and no fans complained. They can tell that there is a plan in place.

It only goes to show that Clement is here for the long haul, and he isn’t satisfied with focusing solely on on-field issues.
