Brentford news this weekClub Brugge serves as an illustration by Philippe Clement of Rangers’ potential

to emerge as a major force in the transfer market.

Borna Barisic is the latest example of a player whose contract the Gers have recently allowed to expire this summer.

Rangers are capable of pulling off the odd big sale, though, with Calvin Bassey landing

a club-record fee of just under £23million in July 2022.

According to Clement, Rangers may get more players for more than £30 million, as was the case with Club Brugge, his previous team.

Igor Thiago, a striker, was sold by the Belgian team to Brentford last week for an estimated £30 million [The Guardian, February 14].

“Brugge has been engaged in this for a number of years.” According to Clement,

we kind of started that [17 February], as reported by the Rangers Review.

“Thiago was sold by them for €37 million. As a result, you notice that these sums increase annually since you have built a name.

You cannot complete it in a single year. As a club, you also need to establish a reputation. It has to do with the club’s level.

“It creates opportunities for the following generation if you sell someone for a specific

price and they go on to succeed somewhere else.

“People say, ‘Ok, he’s coming from Rangers, that is somewhere to look’.

“That’s something that, for example, Ajax did for a long time. Then if a player was at Ajax or another team,

there was a difference in value.”

Phillipe Clement already altering Rangers’ transfer approach

The goal here is to make Rangers more long-term sustainable rather than turning the team into a selling club in the traditional sense.

For instance, the club will have money for the next two or three transfer windows if they can

bring in £30 million for a player one summer.

The Gers have demonstrated their ability to negotiate high payments with the Bassey sale,

but these kinds of agreements are uncommon.

It would be beneficial if the team could promote several players from the academy to the starting squad.

As we witnessed in January, Rangers’ transfer strategy has already begun to shift since Clement’s arrival.

Even if a few players who were unknown to most fans were signed, no fans voiced

any complaints. They are aware that a plan has been put in place.

It just serves to demonstrate that Clement is in it for the long haul and is dissatisfied with

merely attending to issues that arise on the field.

Tom English mentioned the Rangers in other Rangers news, which is why Celtic supporters will be furious.
