Mayor Quinton Lucas objected to one particular word used by Missouri Governor Mike Parson to describe the individuals detained in the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebration shooting.

Governor Parson had some tough comments for the arrested suspects, calling them “thugs.”

“We can’t just let some thugs take over and ruin what happened,” Parson told The Spun.

However, Mayor Quinton Lucas objected to Governor Mike Parson’s usage of the term “thugs” in his statements. He said that it is a classic “dog whistle” that simply promotes online speculation that the suspects’ mug photographs are not being disclosed because they are Black.

Lucas went on to say that because the suspects are adolescents, their identities are being kept private.

“I respect the governor. We get along nicely. I absolutely disagree with how he would describe the issue. I strongly believe this was criminal conduct. It was lawlessness, and I find it frightening. “But ‘thugs’ is a dog whistle in the most classic sense,” Lucas told KCUR last Friday.

“I’ve seen this dog whistle several times. There’s a huge conservative idea on social media right now that the reason these mug images haven’t been disclosed is because the alleged defendants are Black, and if it were a White defendant, we would have shown them. That is completely ridiculous. There are protections to juveniles.”

Sure enough, it’s clear where Mayor Lucas is coming from. Given the gravity of the situation and the fact that the public is paying attention, Governor Parson must exercise caution to avoid spreading disinformation.
