Top priority: Update as Rangers want new deal for “brilliant” Ibrox player who Clement loves
Clement is keen to keep hold of the Rangers man.
Rangers, whose focus will rightfully be on the Scottish Premiership title fight now that they are level on points with Celtic and only behind in goals scored,
have apparently made the contract renewal of one of Philippe Clement’s key players a major priority.
Rangers Transfer News
After a successful January transfer window in which Oscar Cortes,
Mohamed Diomande, and Fabio Silva all arrived on loan,
Rangers’ focus appears to have shifted to probable summer departures, as Clement attempts to make his mark at Ibrox.
After such a successful four months in charge,
the former AS Monaco manager has earned the right to make some changes and implement his vision.
Kemar Roofe, Borna Barisic, and Jon McLaughlin appear to be on their way out,
as they are all out of contract this summer and are unlikely to sign a new agreement before then.
Barisic’s departure will be particularly frustrating,
given that the Gers only have one other first-team left-back, Ridvan Yilmaz, whose future is also uncertain.
However, John Lundstram may not be among the many free agents who may leave Ibrox in the coming months.
Previous rumors indicated that Rangers were planning to offer Lundstram a new deal.
According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Rangers have made Lundstram’s new deal their top priority,
and negotiations are well advanced to ensure the midfielder’s Ibrox future once and for all.
Lundstram, who is reportedly keen to stay in Scotland, has won over Clement,
who is also anxious to keep the former Sheffield United player.
The Rangers manager has already praised his midfielder, saying:”He is significant in several ways.
He never conceals. He always wants the ball.
He knows the tactical study we want to undertake with each game, and he alters it to try to identify spaces.
“”Outstanding” Lundstram is a significant player for Clement.
Lundstram, an experienced midfielder, is now an important player under Clement at Rangers,
to the point where it’s rare for the 29-year-old to be left out of the starting lineup these days.
In fact, Lundtstram has missed only two Scottish Premiership games all season,
starting 22 and coming off the bench for one. If Rangers are to complete their title comeback, Lundstram might be at the center.
Chris Wilder was well aware of the midfielder’s abilities at Sheffield United,
praising him during the Blades’ 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in 2020:
“I have to say, I thought John Lundstram was fantastic when he came on.
He joined the team for a few games. He’s been fantastic for us. His energy levels have fallen,
but we have true competition, and John understands that.
“”I must say, I thought John Lundstram was wonderful when he came on.
He played with the team for a few games. He has been excellent for us.
His energy levels have dropped, but we have actual competitiveness, which John understands.
