After winning the title for the second time in a row in the 1999–00 season, Advocaat considered bolstering his team to enable them to
advance in Europe, something they had not done under the Dutchman’s leadership up to that point.
The Gers were eager to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy when he was still a young striker on the continent, but Advocaat later acknowledged
that the club’s attempt to sign him for £15 million failed to entice him away from PSV Eindhoven,
where he had become one of the best young attackers in the league.
“We could have brought van Nistelrooy into Ibrox so I called his agent because he comes from the same town in Holland where I was
brought up,” said Advocaat. “But he told me that there`s no way Ruud will come to Scotland.”
Despite being unable to join the previous year due to injuries, the striker decided to sign a £19 million contract with Manchester
United in the summer of 2001.
It demonstrates that Rangers were considering a transfer for a player who would develop into a world-class center forward, but in
November 2000 they chose to spend £12 million to acquire Tore Andre Flo from Chelsea to Glasgow.
