COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gene Smith sacked Chris Holtmann, Ohio State’s basketball coach,
on Wednesday in what could be his final significant action as athletic director.
When Ross Bjork arrives in Columbus in March, one of his first priorities will be to identify a replacement for Holtmann.
The list of contenders could increase significantly over the coming few months as Bjork seeks the ideal fit for a program that has to be directed back in the right path.
Following their 62-54 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday night,
the Ohio State Buckeyes have decided to break ways with head coach Chris Holtmann,
according to a source. The Buckeyes have a 14-11 overall record this season,
including a 4-10 record in BIG10 Conference play. The Badgers’ four-game losing streak came to an end with Wednesday night’s setback.
Last season, Ohio State was one of the poorest teams in the conference and did not make the NCAA Tournament.
The Ohio State Buckeyes thought it was time to replace Chris Holtmann as head coach.
It’ll be interesting to see who is on the list of potential head coaches.
He has been head coach at Ohio State since the 2017-2018 season.
Ohio State has made the tournament every season he has coached,
with the exception of 2019-2020, when the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19,
and last season. The Buckeyes were formerly a very excellent basketball program,
but their performance has deteriorated over the last two seasons. They will start the search for a new head coach.
There was no indication that they would let him go after their loss to the Wisconsin Badgers.
Wisconsin was prepared to face Ohio State from the start on Tuesday night, and that was likely the final straw for them.
