McCann: Rangers Hold Unseen Quality Lacking at Celtic
The patience of Rangers supporters is hailed as pivotal in their Scottish Premiership title quest by former Ibrox winger ‘, who asserts the need for a potent No. 9 following their win over Ross County.
Despite narrowly missing out on seizing the top spot in the table, Rangers claimed a 3-1 victory over Ross County at Ibrox. Cyriel Dessers scored twice, with John Souttar adding a late header, while Simon Murray capitalized on defensive lapses for the Highlanders.
McCann highlighted the fans’ response as crucial, noting their steadfast support even when the team fell short of taking the lead—marking the second such occasion in eight days. Contrasting this with rivals Celtic, where dissatisfaction has surfaced despite their recent wins, McCann underlines the positive atmosphere surrounding Rangers, now level on points with the champions after trailing by seven points prior to Philippe Clement’s tenure.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene, McCann stated, “The fans are demonstrating genuine support, showing remarkable patience, which is aiding the team in maintaining composure—a sentiment perhaps not mirrored across the city.”
Ross County’s goalkeeper George Wickens, on loan from Fulham, put in a stellar performance, making a record-breaking 19 saves as Rangers bombarded the goal with 43 shots, 23 of which were on target.
While acknowledging Wickens’ excellence, McCann criticized Rangers’ finishing, suggesting the absence of a clinical striker. He emphasized, “Rangers still lack a genuine No. 9—a natural goal scorer. Silva, Cortes, and Dessers squandered chances, but securing the win is paramount.”
McCann concluded, “Claiming the top spot would have been ideal, but the victory is what matters most. Despite falling short on goals, Rangers exhibited relentless attacking prowess, with Wickens playing a significant role in thwarting their efforts.”
