Few of the 50,000 Rangers supporters who attended the 3-1 victory against Ross County would have witnessed such a game,

and Cyriel Dessers is unlikely to have.

The Gers’ number nine divides opinion from minute to minute, but is clearly supported by manager Philippe Clement.

The Rangers manager has been making the greatest use of his team to keep them fresh,

but Cyriel Dessers remains a player who can annoy while still winning games, as evidenced by his outstanding figures last night.

Rangers matchwinner, Cyriel Dessers, deserves to be supported.

The 29-year-old now has 14 goals and seven assists on the season, totaling 21 goal contributions at a rate of nearly one per game in terms of minutes played.

Without taking penalties, Lawrence Shankland has only five minutes more per goal in the league.

Despite that…

Against Ross County, he had eight tries at goal, scored two goals,

hit the post and had one goal bound effort cleared off the line – earning a good 9/10 on the player ratings.

Let’s be fair to the big Nigerian international for a second; he continues to get into the right positions at the right time.

Are we really still criticizing a player who was inches away from scoring a hat trick?

Fabio Silva has two in his previous two appearances and poses a different style of threat than Cyriel Dessers,

but Rangers having more than one striker to rely on can only be a benefit.

Because of his sluggish start at Ibrox, Dessers continues to face the same screams and groans whenever he misses a chance.

For those who aren’t old enough to remember, Ally McCoist used to miss a few opportunities.

Is Dessers the type of striker we expected to sign this summer?

No.

At his present rate, he will score 20 goals and assist 10 times if his teammates do their part.

Given the difficulties the squad encountered in the first few months of the season,

this is the type of return that may make the difference at the conclusion of the season.

Dessers may yet show to be the hero we need, even if he appears to be the one we don’t want.
