Six Premiership clubs set date for SPFL showdown talks with chiefs
Aberdeen, Livingston, Motherwell, Rangers, St. Mirren, and St. Johnstone have all asked Murdoch MacLennan and Neil Doncaster to
attend the meeting later this month.
After expressing their initial concerns last week regarding the SPFL’s “independence and transparency” of the most recent corporate
governance study on the league’s governing body, the six top-tier clubs have released a new statement.
It says this: “On February 9, the chairman responded to the clubs’ letter to the chief executive and chairman of the SPFL.
“After reviewing the chairman’s reply letter, the clubs feel that a meeting between the chairman and CEO and their shareholders is
essential for transparency and good governance.
concerns over the Independent Governance Review.
“All SPFL member clubs are invited to attend and participate in this meeting,
which is to take place at 11am on February 27.”
“A letter was issued today to the SPFL executive in response to the handling of the recent Independent Governance report,” according
to the joint statement released last week on behalf of the SPFL Premiership clubs Aberdeen,
Motherwell, Livingston, Rangers, St Johnstone, and St. Mirren.
“The clubs have grave reservations about the independence of the report, its transparency,
and the SPFL’s general governance.
“The letter asks for complete clarification on a number of matters so that the clubs,
who are SPFL shareholders, can decide whether more action is required.
Along with providing the SPFL Board with a draft report, SPFL Chairman Murdoch MacLennan issued a statement in a hurry that did
not include all of the investigation’s conclusions.
Furthermore, neither SPFL member clubs nor members of the SPFL Board were
informed or given their consent before the statement was released.
It is highly inappropriate for the SPFL Chairman to have made any public remarks
before to the SPFL Board meeting, which is scheduled to examine the contents of the draft report.
Since the SPFL Executive received the initial draft of the study and made revisions before giving it to SPFL Board members, the clubs
and others have serious concerns about the report’s independence.
“Of the 42 member clubs, just one—aside from those who are currently or were
previously on the SPFL Board—had the chance to provide feedback on the report’s investigation.
“The clubs paid for the development of the report, but despite their repeated requests,
none of the member clubs have received it.
