John Brown, a Rangers icon, has expressed doubts over Manchester United’s choice to trade Jack Butland for Andre Onana.

The 62-year-old Ibrox great was praising the England Euro 2024 hopeful following his impressive debut season with the Rangers.

After his contract at Crystal Palace expired, goalkeeper Jack Butland joined Rangers in the summer. The goalkeeper had previously

spent the final few months of his deal with Manchester United.

Although the goalkeeper never played for the teams who inspired him as a child, John Brown has questioned why United let Jack

Butland go, arguing that Butland is more than capable of playing at Old Trafford.

John Brown: Jack Butland is Manchester United quality

John Brown waxed poetic about Jack Butland during a special promotional event for the Rangers Youth Development Company.

Manchester United spent an estimated £47.2 million to recruit Andre Onana as a replacement for veteran goalkeeper David de Gea, who left the Premier League team in the summer.

The Rangers 9IAR legend, however, believes the Gers have received a steal on Jack Butland and that the stopper is on par with or

perhaps superior to the Cameroonian.

Brown remarked, “I was always a fan of Butland.” He never received more minutes down south, which shocked me.

“There are many goalkeepers in the English Premier League that I believe Jack Butland to be superior to.

“In my opinion, he was Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper when he was there. If my preference was for a reliable goalie, Jack

Butland would be my pick. It’s great for the club that we got him.”

Rangers legend discusses impact of goalkeeper

John Brown has also drawn comparisons between Jack Butland and the illustrious succession of goalkeepers Rangers have been

fortunate enough to have throughout the years.

The Ibrox veteran has stated that Butland will be essential to the team’s prospects this season, arguing that having a solid goalkeeper is crucial to a team’s success.

Butland stated, “The most important thing you need is a quality goalkeeper, and Rangers have that.” “Half the fight is won there.

“It’s not so simple to be a great center back or full back if your goalie is not on the same level as people I worked with, like Allan McGregor, Andy Goram, or Stefan Klos.

“Butland is an international goalkeeper. He’s fresh, he’s not had a great deal of minutes in the previous seasons. But you can see his

quality. When you see him coming out, he gives the backline a reassurance that they don’t need to be too deep.

“Jack Butland has been probably one of Rangers’ best players this season. He has made 39 appearances since joining the Gers in the

summer, conceding 29 goals and keeping 20 clean sheets. With some keepers I played with, I won’t name them, but we would be going

deeper to protect them rather than having faith that if there’s going to be a shot from 25 yards

we’re comfortable they can make the save.”
