Rangers’ position on the Hearts star transfer Lawrence Shankland has clarified following the news from Ibrox Finance.
It has been communicated to Rangers manager Philippe Clement that funds will be available for expenditure at the conclusion of the season.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been informed that money will be available for spending
at the end of the season. Oscar Cortes joined on loan with the option to buy, and the Gers acquired
Mohamed Diomande in January for an alleged £4.5 million.
Another newcomer was Fabio Silva, though it’s unlikely that he’ll stay at Ibrox much longer
than his loan period, which ends in the summer. Shankland was linked to Rangers during
the January transfer window. Given the £20 million investment made last year, some people
questioned whether there may be a quieter summer window at Ibrox.
On Monday, February 12, Rangers financial officer James Taylor seemed to imply differently
in an interview with Rangers Review. With the proviso that the team must make wise use of
what they have, he stated, “There are funds that we will look to utilize and build the squad with.”
As things stand, Clement’s list of objectives for the remainder of the season probably includes
signing another striker. Sorry, Celtic, but Clement now has the best team in the Scottish Premiership,
and it just gets better. Shankland, who Kris Boyd praised as “outstanding,” would raise the bar even
higher. The Scotland international attracted a lot of attention in January, but no offers were placed.
Hearts could have to go up for sale. Shankland
As things stand, Shankland’s contract at Tynecastle will expire in 16 months because he hasn’t
agreed to new terms. Hearts would consequently be more willing to part with their highly valued
asset, albeit they might still want a price of at least £4 million.
In order for that agreement to close in the summer, money needs to be set aside, assuming Clement
does have access to funds. Even though it’s possible to find less expensive solutions, Shankland has
more than shown his value in this league and around Europe. Of course, it is too soon for fans to begin
considering the upcoming season, but Ibrox staff members will be thinking ahead.
Rangers executives are undoubtedly paying special attention to Shankland’s contract issue at Hearts.
