Rangers’ 36-goal hero of yesteryear would be a fine Dessers replacement

Our Blast from the Past strand recalls a Rangers hero from 2004 who they’d love to call upon in the present day.

Philippe Clement has had a fantastic start as Glasgow Rangers manager,

winning 20 of his first 24 games in all competitions since taking over in mid-October.

The Light Blues’ only defeat came against Celtic in the season’s second Old Firm meeting,

towards the end of 2023.The Belgian boss has hauled the Ibrox team back into the Premiership title race,

despite battling with severe injury issues that threatened to derail the season just before Christmas.

and it is a tribute to his managing abilities that the Light Blues made it through the holiday season.

The 49-year-old coach was hit the hardest by his attacking alternatives,

as Danilo sustained a long-term injury against Hearts,

and Kemar Roofe had to be replaced only 15 minutes into the game against St Johnstone due to another knock.

Despite Clement’s signing of Fabio Silva in January to alleviate his centre-forward issues,

Dessers joined the Gers last summer for a transfer fee of around £4.5 million,

but he hasn’t justified the high price with a string of questionable displays.

The Nigerian striker may have 12 goals and seven assists in 35 matches for the club

– a respectable but unspectacular record – but this should not be interpreted as evidence that he has excelled during his time in Glasgow.

The former Feyenoord striker spends long stretches of the game isolated,

failing to connect well with those around him, and as a result, he can go entire games without touching the ball.

When he is given a chance, the striker occasionally takes two or three before scoring,

and this season in the Premiership, the 29-year-old has missed 13 huge chances in 21 games,

ranking highest among all players in the Scottish top flight.
