UCLA hires former running back Deshaun Foster as Chip Kelly’s replacement
Chip Kelly surprisingly stepped down as head coach of the UCLA football team to join the offensive coordinator at Ohio State under his former NFL assistant, Ryan Day. The cash-strapped program saved almost $10 million by not dismissing Kelly, but was compelled to make a hire far after all of the spots on the coaching carousel had been filled.
So, athletic director Martin Jarmond turned to a recognizable face and UCLA alum. Deshaun Foster, who carried for 1,000 yards as a senior at UCLA in 2001 and returned to the program as an assistant coach from 2013-15 and again from 2017-23, has been named UCLA’s new head coach by Jarmond.
Foster recently left Kelly’s staff to become the running backs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders under Antonio Pierce, but he is returning to his alma university to help guide the team through its transition to the Big Ten.
Foster remarked in a statement, “This is a dream come true.” I’ve always wanted to be a Bruin since I was a kid, and now being the head coach at my alma university is an incredible experience, and I’m glad for the opportunity.”
The first-time head coach went on to say, “The foundation of this program will be built on discipline, respect, and enthusiasm.” “These are incredible young men, and I’m excited to get started.”
According to reports regarding the coaching search, Foster was hired not only for his ability to command a room, which impressed UCLA officials, but also for his commitment to recruiting and fundraising in the Los Angeles area.
Kelly’s major limitations as a head coach appeared to be recruiting and fundraising, which most likely contributed to his readiness to depart for a demotion. Foster, who was on staff last season, was perhaps UCLA’s best hope to keep the remaining roster and coaching staff intact.
