Michael O’Neill was taken aback by Ross McCausland’s sudden burst into the Rangers first team, but the Northern

Ireland manager is adamant about it and believes his performance is an inspiration to his fellow internationals. Since

making his Ibrox debut during Steven Davis’ interim management, McCausland has thrived under Philippe Clement,

starting regularly and earning himself a shiny new long-term contract in the process.

In addition, his rise to prominence at Ibrox has propelled him into the international spotlight; in November, he

made his debut for Northern Ireland from the outset in a Euro 2024 qualifying loss to Finland. If his current form

continues, he may even play against Scotland in late March at Hampden.

The international manager, O’Neill, acknowledges that the 20-year-old’s abundance of opportunities this early in his

career has caught him off guard. However, he finds it to be delightful, and he has encouraged the other young candidates to emulate him.

As stated by O’Neill to the Belfast Telegraph, Ross has performed quite well. Even though there is fierce competition

at Rangers because of their excellent form, he has maintained his spot constantly. Under the new manager Philippe

Clement, they have gained a lot of points and results. It is obvious that

Clement likes Ross because he plays him in nearly every game.

The fact that he frequently plays him for 90 minutes is also advantageous, as this is not always the case for a wide

player. I think Ross has progressed a lot in the previous two to three months and hopefully he carries that form and

that consistency on to the international level.

“I believe that Ross, being a young player, deserves a chance. It didn’t look like he was going to get that opportunity

at Rangers. Then, somewhat unexpectedly, Steven Davis assisted him in that regard during his two games as an

acting manager. Ross made progress after that, and Philippe Clement continued to have him on the squad.
