Phillipe Clement has made it clear that one of his Rangers players is no longer in his plans as they attempt to reduce the gap on Celtic and win their first Scottish Premiership title since 2021.

Rangers Transfer News

As the Rangers try to catch their city rivals, Clement has enlisted significant reinforcements to help them win silverware.

Mohamed Diomande joined Rangers on loan from FC Nordsjaelland to boost the club’s midfield options,

while Oscar Cortes from RC Lens provides a more immediate offensive threat.

However, the most high-profile addition was Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves,

which represents a significant coup for the Ibrox club.

The 21-year-old goes north hoping to regain the form that earned him a club record £35.6 million transfer from Porto in 2020. Silva,

who already has two goals for his new team, might be crucial to Rangers’ title hopes.

However, as Rangers fans celebrate their new arrivals,

Clement has already looked ahead to the summer and confirmed the future of one player.

McLaughlin is expected to quit Rangers.

Jon McLaughlin joined at Ibrox in 2020 to deputise for Allan McGregor,

having previously made over 400 appearances,

including an impressive season as first choice between the sticks for Sunderland in League One.

However, after zero minutes this season, Clement has decided it is time to declare McLaughlin surplus to needs at Ibrox.

According to Football Insider, the 36-year-old will quit Ibrox after his current contract expires in May,

since he will not be granted a new one.

His impressive stay in the north east prompted the signing, as then Rangers manager Steven Gerrard told the press:

“He is here to battle for the number one shirt and will provide much-needed competition for positions…

His SPFL experience will help him continue to compete for a spot in the Scotland side.”

While Gerrard’s confidence suggested that McLaughlin would play an important role for his team,

the veteran goalkeeper has struggled for consistent minutes, making only 25 league games in his first three seasons with the club.

The veteran has now slid down the pecking order,

with the arrival of Jack Butland in 2023 propelling Robby McCrorie to second choice at McLaughlin’s cost.

His current manager, Clement, used the January window to show his displeasure with Rangers’ handling of expired contracts, telling the press:

“Having five players out of contract is a ridiculous situation because you’re wasting money. They have no worth if their contract is terminated.”

With McLaughlin reportedly earning £317,200 per Salary Sport,

it’s easy to understand why Clement is unhappy by the lack of haste in getting these players off the books. Due to a tight title competition with their nearest competitors,

as well as the remaining stages of the cup, McLaughlin will have little opportunities to play.

An revered veteran of the game and a capable deputy for a number of years, most Rangers fans will appreciate the job McLaughlin has done,

but may lament the financial expense of not moving him on when they could still receive a price for him.
