According to Gary Keown, Philippe Clement has returned the Ibrox board to its box following “moronic” requests that Willie Collum be barred from judging Rangers matches.

The Rangers board had expressed their dissatisfaction with the SFA official during December’s Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic,

when Collum was on VAR duty and refused to award a penalty for an obvious handball by Brendan Rodgers’ side.

As a result, the Ibrox board is alleged to have requested that Collum be barred from refereeing their games,

a decision that Clement has stated he opposes, much to the joy of Scottish Daily Mail columnist Keown.

He wrote in the Scottish Daily Mail on Sunday (11 February, page 96):

“Thirty-two seconds it took Philippe Clement to put the Ibrox board back in their box on Friday ,

and show why he is exactly the kind of figurehead Rangers need as they continue to try to get themselves back to a position of strength.

“On Friday, in the space of a few short questions and sparse answers in his pre-Ayr United press conference,

he confirmed beyond question that he is the front-facing voice of sanity that Rangers have lacked

for so long by exposing the moronic nature of the boardroom’s calls for Willie Collum to be banned from refereeing their matches.”

During Michael Beale’s tenure at Ibrox, there was a sense of complete turmoil,

with a manager and board fighting against each other with little success. This has completely changed when Clement came in Glasgow.

The Belgian has not been reluctant to express his views on crucial issues,

such as the large number of players slated to leave on free transfers this summer or

the high number of ailments now affecting the playing squad.

Clement isn’t a yes man, which is exactly what the Rangers board needs right now to hold them accountable.

Following Beale’s dismissal, the club required a revolution and a reset, and their new manager has provided just that.

However, the Ibrox board deserves respect for taking the effort to find the ideal candidate in Clement.

He appears to be the perfect match for the Gers right now, and those in power in Glasgow could not have chosen a better manager.
