Dean Henderson and Jack Butland, former Manchester United goalkeepers, will compete for an England spot before Euro 2024.

Jack Butland, the goalkeeper for Rangers and a former Manchester United player, is being considered for an unexpected call-up to the England national team, according to England manager Gareth Southgate.

If Butland is included in Southgate’s squad, he will play Dean Henderson, a graduate of the Carrington Academy, who is also hoping to make the final roster before Euro 2024.

Butland was signed by United on a loan from Crystal Palace in January 2023.

After just six months at Old Trafford, he made a permanent move to Scottish powerhouse Rangers.

Throughout his brief tenure at Old Trafford, the goalkeeper did not play for United. In all competitions, he was named to the matchday squad 20 times.

Henderson moved to Crystal Palace from United last summer. After joining the team at the age of 14, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave him his senior debut in September 2020 during a League Cup match against Luton.

Although Henderson might also be called up, Southgate acknowledged that he could look to Butland to help him

with his goalkeeping quandary. Jordan Pickford of Everton is still the best player in England, but it’s unclear who

will replace him.

Since David Raya took Aaron Ramsdale’s spot on the team, the player has not been involved with Arsenal. Nick Pope of Newcastle is presently hurt after suffering a shoulder injury during the match against United in December.

In an attempt to win over Southgate, Henderson is keeping Sam Johnstone out of the starting lineup at Palace.

“It is an issue for us and the situation is up in the air,” declared the Three Lions manager. We must ensure that we are keeping an eye on everyone. Since Jack is an accomplished goalie and plays for a major club, he is included in that.

“With Nick injured, Sam not playing right now, and Aaron not playing, it’s not the best scenario. We will have to observe how that transpires.

During the March international break, England will play friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

After that, on June 3, the team plays Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on June 7, it plays Iceland. England’s Euro 24 campaign gets underway shortly after, on June 16, when they take on Serbia.
