Gers have alternative to £4.3m signing as backup to talisman: Opinion

There was no need to change the number ten position in the summer, as Todd Cantwell is currently flying for the Rangers.

But what we do know is that Philippe Clement, the manager of the Gers, needs to figure out a way to guarantee that, should he be absent, someone in the team is able to light up Ibrox in the same way.

Although it is obviously unrealistic to have a player with Todd Cantwell’s caliber on the bench for the Rangers, DataMB’s comparison model shows us two players who could serve as backups.

The Rangers team has a backup in Todd Cantwell.

The 25-year-old’s work ethic, attitude, tenacity, and will to succeed have never been questioned.

This season, he has, if anything, been trying too hard. With his fifth goal in his last seven league games, he gave us

the most recent proof of why things have suddenly clicked on his 50th game for the team. How then would one

replace this? In the same manner as you would with hiring and the club’s new model. It’s interesting to note that

against Aberdeen, Cantwell was replaced by Mohamed Diomande, a recent £4.3 million acquisition; it’s possible that

we’ll see the January acquisition used in that capacity.

However, there are two more players with shoutouts on the books. The ability to dribble or carry the ball, key passes,

expected goals and assists, and goals should be the main criteria for a Rangers number ten.

Few people are currently more adept at this than Todd Cantwell.

As the radar below demonstrates, there are two players who could step in and contribute right away: Ianis Hagi and Alex Lowry.

Naturally, Lowry is sidelined with an injury right now, but he should be back following the March international break, and Hagi is expected to return in the summer.

The fact that Diomande signed implies that we will be able to let go of the Romanian international, who is one of our

more marketable players—interest is always present. Although Lowry doesn’t have to be Cantwell, his numbers

indicate that he should be trusted to step in for him when needed and offer cover.

Give youth a chance; they might just save you a pound, as Ross McCausland has shown us.
