Robby McCrorie of the Rangers may leave Ibrox during the summer transfer window.
According to Derek Ferguson, Robby McCrorie may consider leaving the Rangers in the
summer since he is now old enough to need to play on a regular basis.
With Allan McGregor’s retirement announcement at the conclusion of the previous season,
the 25-year-old may have thought he had a chance to top the leaderboard at Ibrox.
However, Jack Butland joined as a result of a hiring spree by former manager Michael Beale,
and the England international has performed admirably and become a big favorite with the crowd.
With the connection McCrorie has developed with the fervent Gers fan base, it doesn’t seem likely that
Butland, 30, will be moved anytime soon.
Ferguson believes there may be a decision to be made about him by all parties at the conclusion of the season,
however Philippe Clement provided an explanation for his refusal to let him to leave the team on loan during the
January transfer window.
“I think right now it’s not a criticism of McCrorie because he is a good goalkeeper, a top goalkeeper,
” he said in an interview with Ibrox News. “But we need to see that with McCrorie over the course of a season.”
“He has been out on loan a few times, but he is at Rangers and a member of the Scotland team for a
reason—I just don’t think he’s up to par with Jack Butland.”
“He is a capable goalie, but right now he serves as a solid backup to potentially exert some pressure on Butland,
who is an outstanding goalie.”
Is McCrorie a possible top contender? Yes, he could. He needs to play; you can’t play second
fiddle your entire career. He’s getting on a little.
“He’s a good goalie, but like anyone, you have to watch them for the entire season before
you can form a more accurate opinion of them.”
Would the Rangers allow Robby McCrorie to go?
Goalies are a whole different species than players in any other position on the field.
With the sticks set up so simply, just one player may participate.
The issue McCrorie has is that in the Rangers’ hierarchy, he is positioned behind an exceptional goalkeeper.
While Beale made several mistakes throughout the summer, one of his better decisions was bringing in Butland.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper, who has shown true leadership both on the field and
in the locker room, has been a vital component of Rangers’ championship push.
It does suggest one possible course of action for McCrorie, which is that leaving in the summer
would be the greatest choice for him at this time in his career.
