According to various sources, the Detroit Lions are adding another new element to their defensive leadership by hiring Deshea Townsend as cornerbacks coach

and passing game coordinator. Detroit has also hired Terrell Williams as its new defensive line coach and run game coordinator.

It’s unclear what the additions imply for Dre Bly (cornerbacks coach) and John Scott (defensive line coach), who were hired last offseason.

This past season, the Lions improved their run defense, finishing second in the league, but they still struggled against the pass.

They ranked 27th in passing yards allowed, while opponent quarterbacks had a passer rating of 93.1 against them this season, which was 23rd.

Rookie slot cornerback Brian Branch had an excellent first season,

but Detroit did not have an outside cornerback ranked among the top 90 players in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.

Cam Sutton failed after receiving a large free-agent contract last offseason,

and fellow addition Emmanuel Moseley played only two snaps before sustaining another ACL injury.

Jerry Jacobs started in Moseley’s place to begin the season, but was later benched in favor of Kindle Vildor,

a midseason addition whose most memorable play occurred in the NFC Championship game when a pass bounced off his face and into the hands of Brandon Aiyuk for a 51-yard reception.

Detroit is anticipated to increase its investment in the outside cornerback position, which now has new leadership.

Townsend, 48, is a former Steelers cornerback who has made five NFL coaching stops,

most recently working as the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for the past two years.
