Chris Sutton and Kris Boyd battle words over the transfer exist of the Gers star who has 14 clean sheets in 22 matches
Sutton and Boyd argued on whether Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland could join England’s European Championship roster.
Sutton told Sky Sports Football on Tuesday (6 February, 07:34pm) that
he did not believe the 30-year-old would be included in Gareth Southgate’s team,
although acknowledging that he had been “excellent” for the Gers this season.
But Boyd said that he “wouldn’t rule it out” because Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale
aren’t playing right now, while Newcastle United’s Nick Pope is injured.
“No, I think his form this season has been excellent, I agree with everything you’ve said,” Sutton replied.
“I believe his disposition is really crucial. If you play for Celtic or Rangers, you have to deal with atmospheres such as this.
“He’s not saving many shots, but when he’s called upon, he does a great job. But I don’t think he’ll be attending the Euros, do you?
“I really don’t know,” Boyd said. “Pickford is without a doubt number one.
I saw Ramsdale on the Arsenal bench, having not played much. Sam Johnstone was in the England squad last time,
but he is not playing now. I know Dean Henderson is now playing, and Nick Pope is injured. Will I rule him out? “No, I would not.”
“Is that a yes then?” Sutton inquired.
“I wouldn’t rule it out,” Boyd replied.
Why should Jack Butland not be called up to the England squad?
When Butland joined the Rangers, there were tremendous expectations for
how good he could be when he made the move north of the border,
but he has probably already surpassed those expectations.
After spending several years on the bench at Crystal Palace and then on loan at Manchester United last season,
he was keen to get some regular first-team action.
That is an opportunity afforded by the Gers, and he has certainly not disappointed thus far,
with his performances placing him in contention for his first England call-up since 2018.
Given that several other possibilities are currently unavailable and he is in the finest shape he has been in in years, he deserves a chance.
The Englishman is a far more experienced keeper than he was six years ago,
and he might truly contribute to the group, even if he is unlikely to challenge Jordan Pickford for the number one spot.
