Alfredo Morelos might make a surprise comeback to European football after Turkish club Samsunspor made a loan approach for him.

The former Rangers striker only recently signed a new contract with Santos,

but he had to restructure his initial £40,000-a-week contract to about half of that after the Brazilian club was relegated to the country’s second tier for the first time in its 111-year history last season.

Morelos made his season debut for Santos this weekend, coming on as a second-half substitute.

However, his time in Brazil has been a significant disappointment,

as he has yet to score in an injury-plagued period since arriving in September.

He could now quit and join Samsunspor, who have offered him a loan with the option to buy.

The Turkish transfer market remains open until Friday night,

and it’s unlikely that cash-strapped Santos would be difficult to work with

after president Marcelo Teixeira complained about Morelos’ initial contract with the club under the previous regime.

He explained: “We couldn’t terminate Alfredo Morelos’ contract because it would have cost far too much money,

so we renegotiated a new one.

“He is an athlete who has earned and continues to earn a lot of money.” He was initially offered an extremely inflated contract.”

The 27-year-old was frequently linked with a move to Turkey during his time at Rangers,

and despite leaving at the end of last season, Fenerbahce remained the most interested club in Turkey.

Now he could finally make his way to Europe and join Samsunspor,

who were promoted last season and are now two points clear of the drop zone in the Turkish Super League.
