Jerry Rosburg’s NFL Comeback Hits a Snag: Deal Falls Through, Reports Reveal
Jerry Rosburg, the former interim head coach of the Denver Broncos, has decided not to rejoin the league.
Not yet, at least.
It appears as though Rosburg and John Harbaugh will not be reuniting in Baltimore, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero a day earlier.
Before retiring in 2019, Rosburg worked as a special teams coordinator for the Ravens for 11 seasons under head coach Jim Harbaugh. During his time there, Baltimore’s special teams were among the best in the league.
However, he made a comeback to the NFL three weeks into the 2022 regular season when he went to Denver to work with Nathaniel Hackett’s staff to assist with pre-snap efficiency and game management.
The position became available after the Broncos offense struggled in the first two games of that season due to a glut of false starts and delay-of-game penalties.
With two games left in the regular season, Rosburg was elevated to the position of interim head coach by the Broncos, who encouraged him to concentrate on game management over the next 13 games. He fired Dwayne Stukes, the coordinator of special teams, and Butch Barry, the offensive line coach, right away.
He gave Justin Outten the play-calling duties and instructed him to adjust the game plan to play to Russell Wilson’s advantages.
Rosburg’s work had an instant impact. Given that Rosburg only coached two games, it is noteworthy that the offense recorded two of its three best point outputs during his tenure.
All in all, the team appeared more composed, making the 5-12 Broncos regret not benching Hackett sooner.
Rosburg was given the opportunity to bid on the long-term position, but the Broncos chose to sign Sean Payton. It appears like Jerry Rosburg still wants to play in the league, even after missing the 2023 season, but he won’t be returning to Baltimore.
