“The fact is…” There is currently a “major trust issue” between Brendan Rodgers and the 23-year-old Celtics player.
Much has been written in the last few days about Celtic, their transfers, and how the season has gone terribly wrong.
There is a lot for Celtic supporters to be concerned about this week, including blowing a ten-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership, not adding enough players in the January window, and facing serious inquiries into their summer recruitment.
The relationship between Brendan Rodgers and Alexandro Bernabei is currently in doubt, though, as journalist Keith Jackson has reported that there are issues between the two and that the Celtic manager was “crystal clear” at the beginning of his second tenure about what he thought of the player Ange Postecoglou spent £3.75 million on. I haven’t even discussed the poor form of players like Kyogo Furuhashi and the injury issues that continue to plague Rodgers.
According to Jackson’s Daily Record column, “There is a major trust issue between the pair which, funnily enough, represents a microcosm of the wider issues engulfing the champions at a critical point in the campaign.” Rodgers simply does not believe Bernabei can be relied upon to fill in for the injured Greg Taylor, and he’s made that crystal clear since his early days back in the job.
Brendan Rodgers’ verdict on Alexandro Bernabei
Earlier in the season, the Celtic boss started the 23-year-old Argentine in the first squad against Ros County, and although he appeared content with the decision, his comments reveal a lot about his opinion of the player.
“I think he hasn’t had his best time here,” Odgers remarked, speaking to BBC Radio Scotland via 67 Hail Hail. That’s the terrible honesty of it. I simply asked him to play in the games the way I’ve occasionally seen him in training.
“He needs to improve his accuracy when serving the ball, even though he is swift and aggressive.” He was signed because of his qualities.
“I’ve seen a lot of wonderful attributes from him in training, so maybe he can show off his finest form. Greg Taylor has continuously displayed a high caliber of play.
Not exactly a glowing recommendation when Rodgers essentially acknowledges that the injury to Greg Taylor is the only reason he’s playing Bernabei.
Regardless of Bernabei’s situation, one thing is certain—the Argentine is just not talented enough to play for Celtic.
The moment will come for the team to try to sell Bernabei, as Rodgers has made it obvious that he did not think highly of him earlier in the season.
It’s unlikely that they will recover any of the large sum that was paid for him over two seasons ago, and if he does eventually go, the club might have to absorb some financial losses.
