With the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII just around the corner,

the Chiefs have officially fallen in Vegas. Although the team’s primary goal is to win another title,

Kansas City may need to make ready for one of its coaches to be plucked shortly after Sunday’s game.

Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach with the Chiefs, is a candidate for “several” defensive coordinator jobs,

according to a recent report by Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Jones mentioned the Washington Commanders (who are now hiring Joe Whitt Jr.),

the University of Michigan, and the Seattle Seahawks.

Cullen has been involved in football for many years; he is currently finishing up his second season with the Chiefs organization.

The 56-year-old had a successful time as a student at the University of Massachusetts,

where he later served as coach in the early 1990s. He has been on six different NFL teams and has been up and down the college ranks over the years.

Cullen worked as a defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 before moving to Kansas City,

so he has expertise in that role.

Jacksonville finished 20th in total yards allowed that season and 28th in points per drive.

Even if such stats don’t indicate a league-average team,

the defense surely improved over the previous season.

If Cullen leaves and returns to the world of coordinating, the Chiefs will have suffered a significant blow.

Cullen has made the Kansas City front one of the best in the NFL in each of his seasons with the organization.

Not only did the team do exceptionally well in 2022–2023 in terms of sacks, pressures, quarterback hits,

and other metrics, but it also translated into increased output this season.

The Chiefs, led by George Karlaftis, Chris Jones, and other players,

finished second in the league in sacks during the 2023–2024 season.

For Cullen, working for the Seahawks and Wolverines makes sense.

Given that Mike Macdonald was recently hired by Seattle to be their head coach and has links to

Cullen from their time together with the Baltimore Ravens, a reunion seems certain.

Jesse Minter is being replaced by someone at Michigan under new head coach Sherrone Moore.

It’s a smart move to show interest in someone with Cullen’s status.

According to reports, Cullen has not yet interviewed for either position,

which makes sense given the assignment he has this week. As the NFL postseason draws to a conclusion,

it will be interesting to see whether there is any mutual interest.
