In Boston, Marcus Smart gained recognition as a tough All-Defensive guard who frequently produced “winning plays” for the Celtics. Even while he made a big effect on the basketball, he might have had an even greater influence off the court.

Throughout his nine years in Boston, Smart was proud of the community work he had done. His YounGameChanger Foundation, which offers inner-city youngsters STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) support and serves as an inspiration for families and pediatric cancer patients, is one of his greatest efforts.

After being traded last summer, Smart made his first trip back to TD Garden on Sunday night as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. In celebration of Smart’s considerable philanthropic activities, the Celtics used this unique occasion to name him as their “Hero Among Us.” The prize is given “to an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community.”

Just like they did following the touching Smart tribute video the Celtics presented during the first quarter, the TD Garden crowd responded with a standing ovation and a “We love Marcus” chant.

Unfortunately, Smart’s finger injury, which has kept him out of action since January 9, prevented him from playing against the Celtics. The opportunity to witness Smart take on his former teammates won’t come until next year for C’s supporters.
