Philippe Clement: Rangers boss warns against title-winning thoughts ahead of Aberdeen visit
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has stated that he is not thinking about
their potential to go top of the Scottish Premiership for the first time this season,
as the title battle takes another turn.
Celtic’s slip-up at Aberdeen means the Ibrox club can go top for at least 24 hours
if they beat the Dons by at least three goals on Tuesday night.
Clement’s team has won their previous four league games after losing to their Old Firm opponents in December,
and they are three points behind with a game in hand.
However, the Belgian, who was crowned Premiership Manager of the Month for January,
maintains that no one should be thinking about Celtic ahead of their game against Aberdeen.
“I hope not in the dressing room, but definitely not in my thoughts.
“It’s all about yourself and the next game,” he told Sky Sports News.
“It is not my responsibility as a player to think about the next few weeks and months;
it is my responsibility to think about reintegrating all of the players back into the group.
“I’m happy for the time, but I’m never satisfied with simply sitting on the sofa and enjoying myself; it doesn’t work.
“We need to maintain our edge, hunger, and desire.
“This club is not at its full potential; we have new signings who need to be integrated into the team,
and we have a lot of players coming back from injury.
“We can only grow in the next couple of months.”
Neil Warnock will take charge of Aberdeen for the first time at
Ibrox after being appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.
Clement is not concerned about what the new manager might do.
“I don’t think we’ve ever met, but it’s someone with a lot of experience in the game,” he said.
“We are focused on ourselves, therefore I don’t expect to see many changes in Aberdeen’s style of play or their tactics.
“We are focused on ourselves, therefore I don’t expect to see many changes in Aberdeen’s style of play or their tactics.
“We are prepared for any circumstance, and things can change during games,
so we’ve been working on that a lot over the previous few months.
We are not focused on a single issue; we know that if a team does something, we must do the same.”
Defender Leon Balogun was forced off with a possible fractured cheek in last Saturday’s 3-0 victory
against Livingston, and Clement is unsure when he will return.
“He’s with the surgeon to check what to do, for sure he will not be available for tomorrow.”
Ryan Jack, who is still recovering from an injury, will also miss the encounter, according to the boss.
Ryan Jack will not be selected tomorrow since he is coming off an injury and has a history of ailments.
“It is only a short recovery time between the two games, so I will not take the risk with him.”
