‘Interesting’ Philippe Clement question raised ahead of Rangers vs Aberdeen
Gordon Duncan says it will be “interesting” to see just how much Philippe Clement rotates his Rangers side following a team news update.
Clement said at his Aberdeen press conference on Monday (5 February) that midfielder Ryan Jack will be rested,
while centre-back Leon Balogun is out due to a face injury.
Abdallah Sima and Danilo are long-term absentees at Ibrox,
but Philippe Clement has plenty of options.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News [5 February, 14:39pm], Duncan said:
“Rangers will be relieved the injury update isn’t as terrible as usual.
“It appears that every week this season, the Rangers have suffered a high-profile injury.”
“Clement explains that they want to manage Ryan.
Jack’s situation: he’s had a lot of troubles this season. He will not play against his former team.
“Leon Balogun sustained a facial injury in the previous game and is seeing a specialist,
so he will not play in the heart of their defence.
“John Souttar usually fills in for Balogun when he is unavailable,
so there is a slight reshuffle but nothing major.
“It’ll be interesting to see what Clement does because he made six changes at the weekend and is usually keen to rotate the squad.”
Philippe Clement’s Rangers possibilities versus Aberdeen
Rangers still have some key players out, which limits Clement’s choices at centre-forward,
where only Cyriel Dessers and Fabio Silva can play.
The Belgian can afford to rest a player like Jack, and Balogun’s absence,
while unfortunate, is not the end of the world because Souttar will partner Connor Goldson.
Ridvan Yilmaz, Tom Lawrence, Scott Wright, and Oscar Cortes will all be looking to start against Aberdeen on Tuesday (6 February), after coming off the bench in the 3-0 victory against Livingston.
Clement must be careful not to make too many changes, and Aberdeen will be tough opponents with new manager Neil Warnock, therefore the strongest possible XI must be picked.
The Scottish Cup encounter with Ayr United next weekend provides a better opportunity to rest important players, so anticipate a very strong lineup at Ibrox against the Dons.
In other Rangers news, Clement acknowledges that a decision he had to make last week left him “hurt”.
