Ex Rangers assistant reveals reason behind bizarre Ange swipe and lifts lid on that Michael Beale ‘lucky’ jibe
Ange Postecoglou was pulled out of the press conference to try to give the Light Blues players more energy to defeat
Celtic, according to former Rangers assistant Neil Banfield.
When the Englishman claimed that the Australian had said something that left a “little taste in the mouth” after
left scratching their heads. He also added that “he said one or two things
that make you want to say, ‘Okay, right, we’re coming’.”
Rangers never managed to catch Postecoglou’s Celtic team; the Australian went on to defeat Beale’s team once more
in the league and Scottish Cup semifinals before losing a scoreless draw at Ibrox in the season’s final league match
now clarified the meaning behind his remarks in a conversation with Football Scotland. “As another coach, Ange had
said something like, ‘Okay, we’re going to make sure that next time you don’t dominate the game.'”
Which makes sense—he is Celtic’s manager!
Saying something like, ‘Look, this is what their manager said, we don’t want that to happen again,’ is how you
motivate your squad to improve. Perhaps I didn’t phrase it correctly when I said, “We’re coming for him the next
game,” but I would definitely use a better wording the next time. It was just intended to serve as motivation for us to
try harder and give it our all in the next game so that we wouldn’t be subjugated.
“We talked about him saying something small, and when you’re competing against someone you try to use that to
your own gain,” the person said. “The entire context of the conversation was how well he’d done and how good a job
he’d done.” That was the part of us not wanting him to think that again, to motivate your team. It was about making
sure it didn’t happen again, so I wouldn’t alter it too much if a manager says something,
I’m going to utilize it for my team in the next game!
Banfield also mentioned a different remark Beale made about Postecoglou, calling the Australian manager “lucky.”
